“Courtly Pastimes” to appear from Routledge (Nov. 2022)

Congratulations to Julie Human and Gloria Allaire, organizers of the XVth Triennial Congress in Lexington (KY, USA), for the appearance of their edited volume Courtly Pastimes (Routledge, 2022). Many of the chapters in this volume originated at the Congress, which featured the titular theme.

“The modern concept of passing leisure hours pleasantly would, in the Middle Ages, have fallen under the rubric of Sloth, a deadly sin. Yet aristocrats of past centuries were not always absorbed in affairs of state or warfare. What did they do in moments of peace, “downtime” as we might call it today? In this collection of essays, scholars from various disciplines investigate courtly modes of entertainment ranging from the vigorous to the intellectual: hunting, jousting, horse racing: physical and verbal games; reading, writing, and book ownership. Favorite pastimes spanned differences of gender and age, and crossed geographical and cultural boundaries. Literary and historical examples come from England, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy.

“Courtly Pastimes analyzes the underlying rationales for such activities: to display power and prestige, to acquire cultural capital, to instill a sense of community, or to build diplomatic alliances. Performativity—so crucial in social rituals—could become transgressive if taken to extremes. Certain chapters explore the spaces of courtliness: literal or imaginary; man-made, natural, or a hybrid of both. Other chapters concern materiality and visual elements associated with courtly pastimes: from humble children’s toys and playthings to elite tournament attire, castle murals, and manuscript illuminations.”

Triennial Congress postponed to 2023

Dear Members of the International Courtly Literature Society,

Lengthy discussions over the past few months within the ICLS executive committee as well as with other scholarly societies, the International Arthurian Society and Société Rencesvals in particular, have resulted in the decision to move the XVIIth ICLS congress planned at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) to 24-29 July 2023.

Due to continuing uncertainties regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on travel, the full feasibility of an international conference in 2022 is in doubt. Western Michigan University, for instance, has already announced that the 2022 Kalamazoo congress would be online again. We believe delaying the ICLS triennal congress to 2023 will increase chances of international travel returning entirely to normal, Canada lifting its stringent travel restrictions, and international delegates obtaining funding from their institutions.

This move will also avoid scheduling clashes with the Rencesvals conference, which has been postponed to 2022, and the Arthurian congress, which will probably be pushed back to 2024. Coincidentally, this postponement also means that the 2023 congress will take place exactly 50 years after the founding of our society in 1973 – all the more cause for celebration.

You can expect a call for papers on the theme of “Redefining Courtliness” in November 2021.

Plusieurs mois de discussions au sein du bureau de la SILC ainsi qu’avec d’autres sociétés savantes, notamment la Société international arthurienne et la Société Rencesvals, ont mené à la décision de déplacer le XVIIe congrès de la SILC prévu à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique (Vancouver) aux 24-29 juillet 2023.

Les incertitudes qui subsistent actuellement sur la pandémie de COVID-19 et son impact sur les déplacements rend incertaine la tenue d’un colloque international en bonne et due forme en 2022. Western Michigan University, par exemple, a déjà annoncé que l’édition 2022 du congrès de Kalamazoo se tiendrait à nouveau en ligne. Nous sommes d’avis que repousser le congrès triennal de la SILC jusqu’en 2023 augmentera les chances que les déplacements internationaux soient revenus à la normale, que les lourdes restrictions actuelles à l’entrée du territoire canadien soient levées, et que les participants au congrès obtiennent de leurs institutions les fonds nécessaires pour voyager.

Retarder le congrès d’un an permettra également d’éviter un embouteillage avec le congrès Rencesvals, repoussé jusqu’en 2022, et le congrès arthurien, qui se tiendra probablement en 2024. Par un heureux hasard, ce changement de date permettra aussi au XVIIe congrès de se dérouler exactement 50 ans après la fondation de la SILC en 1973 – raison de plus de célébrer nos retrouvailles.

L’appel à communications, sur le thème “Redéfinir la courtoisie”, sera diffusé en novembre 2021.

A Message from the International President

Dear colleagues/ Cher.e.s collègues, 

May I wish you all a very happy new year 2021. Let us hope that it will bring us back together in due course with families, friends and colleagues from whom we have been separated for too long. I am writing with some news of changes in the Executive Committee, and with news of the launch of our new online Open Access journal, ‘Encomia: Journal of the International Courtly Literature Society’, and with a request! 

Je vous souhaite à tou.te.s un très joyeux Nouvel An 2021. Espérons que nous pourrions eventuellement nous réunir avec nos proches, nos amis, et nos collègues de qui nous sommes séparés depuis trop longtemps. Je vous écris avec des nouvelles de changements dans le bureau international de la SILC ainsi que la bonne nouvelle que nous sommes sur le point de lancer notre journal en ligne, ‘Encomia: le Journal de la SILC’. Nous vous transmettons une requête également! 

In the International Executive, we are delighted to announce that Professor Leah Tether, of the University of Bristol, UK, has taken over from Dr Rebecca Dixon of the University of Liverpool as International Secretary. Dr Lucas Wood of Texas Tech University has taken over from Dr Kristin Burr of Saint Joseph’s University as International Treasurer. We sincerely thank both Kristin and Rebecca for their service to the Society and warmly welcome Leah and Lucas!

Our Bibliography, Encomia, as agreed at the AGM, has become an Open Access Journal, hosted by Garnier, thanks to the help of Beverly Evans and Richard Trachsler during this transition. We are very excited about this opportunity to shape the field with the launch of our journal. We would like to invite national secretaries to consult with their boards and to propose one or two possible individuals from each national branch to sit on the Advisory Board of the Journal. Please send any suggestions to me by the end of February. Many thanks indeed!

The first issue of the journal will have a foreword by Michelle Szkilnik and will contain peer-reviewed articles submitted to Emma, Tom Hinton, and Michelle Bolduc for the proceedings of the Exeter ICLS congress. Emma is writing to all authors who have submitted papers to ask whether they would be happy to have their work considered for Encomia as well as for the volumes with Liverpool Press (one or the other!).  

Le premier numéro du journal sera introduit par Michelle Szkilnik et présentera une sélection d’articles déjà soumis à Emma, Tom et Michelle pour les actes du congrès d’Exeter. Emma écrit à tous les contributeurs pour leur demander s’ils sont d’accord pour que leur travail soit considéré pour les deux publications (l’une ou l’autre). 

We are currently planning our next meeting, one which we very much hope can take place face to face: the 17th triennial congress of the Society to be held at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver in July 2022. We will send out a call for papers before the summer, and keep you updated on developments.

At the XVIIth Triennial Congress, the following officers were elected:

The network as a subject of study has blossomed in Medieval Studies in recent years. The notion of ‘textual community’ coined by Brian Stock has focused critical scrutiny on the ways in which literature calls communities into being. Renewed attention has been paid to the links between different authors and texts, but also to the social dimension of reception – who owned and read literary texts, what motivated owners and audiences’ interest in them, and how literature contributed to binding different communities together. Meanwhile, conceptual tools such as Bruno Latour’s actor-network model are proving to offer productive and increasingly popular ways of thinking about the connectedness of medieval texts, their creators, and audiences.
The International Courtly Literature Society proposes to recognise the vibrancy and timeliness of this topic by making it the central theme for its next International Triennial Congress, which will be held at the University of Exeter (UK) from 22-27th July 2019. We invite proposals of up to 200 words for 20-minute papers in English or French, to be submitted by 1 June 2018. We are also interested to welcome full panel proposals of up to 4 papers.
 
Potential paper/panel topics include (but are not limited to):
–          Courts as communities
–          Textual communities
–          Literary and artistic collaboration
–          The network as a concept
–          Linguistic communities
–          Material communities at court
Alongside the main business of scholarly exchange and debate, the conference will include visits to local medieval landmarks and other places of interest. All these activities will take place in a spirit of collaboration, community, and friendship, which will allow participants to build and renew their own professional and personal networks.

Le réseau est devenu un sujet de prédilection pour les médiévistes au cours des dernières années. La notion de ‘communauté textuelle’ définie par Brian Stock a eu l’effet de focaliser l’attention des chercheurs sur les divers moyens à travers lesquels la littérature donne naissance aux communautés. La critique s’est évertuée à relever les rapports entre différents auteurs ou textes, mais aussi à détailler la dimension sociale de la transmission : la nature de l’intérêt porté aux textes littéraires par leurs publics, l’identité et les motivations de ceux qui commanditaient ou collectionnaient ces textes, et la capacité de la littérature à créer et à nourrir les communautés. En même temps, divers modèles conceptuels tel que la théorie acteur-réseau développée par Bruno Latour se sont révélés utiles pour analyser les liens entres les textes médiévaux, leurs créateurs, et leurs publics.
La Société internationale de littérature courtoise se propose de reconnaître l’importance et l’actualité de ce sujet en l’inscrivant comme thème principal de son prochain Congrès international, du 22 au 27 juillet 2019 à l’université d’Exeter (Royaume-Uni). Nous vous invitons à nous faire part de vos propositions en envoyant un résumé de 200 mots maximum (en anglais ou en français) pour des communications de 20 minutes, avant le 1er juin 2018. Nous lirons aussi avec intérêt les propositions d’ateliers complets (maximum 4 intervenants).
